**model of the moment: saskia de brauw

Hello readers, I'm back again. I've had so many experiences since I left this blog for college graduation, family life, and travel... but one thing remains the same: my admiration for models, style, and the fashion industry, along with a belief in the value of the artistic expression and passion that are the fueling undercurrents of the field. I hope, then, that this blog will purvey a range of style which is intimidating only in its authenticity, and enviable insofar as it helps to inspire. If magazine covers and billboards are seen as promoting a singular vision of style or beauty, then I hope that this blog will alter that illusion, so that fashion for you feels not restrictive but expressive, not shallow but divine. Forget any limiting caricatures of womanhood and beauty that you've seen played out on television or in books, or even acted out in life: there is no pre-requisite for beauty. True beauty blossoms from individual character, and the style and looks of the women featured here ultimately reveal the uniqueness of the women themselves.

To reintroduce the blog, I'd like to feature Saskia de Brauw, a model who recently returned to the industry after a 13-year hiatus. At age 16, Saskia left the modeling world to pursue her education and a career as an artist. She waited until age 29 to return to the world of modeling, and now, at age 31, Saskia is becoming one of the most sought after models in the world. As Saskia says, "I always refuse to lie about my age. I don't care about being 30... Maybe I have some kind of strength as a grownup woman who doesn't automatically fit in [boxes]." (From Style.com/Print) Saskia's career defies industry standards: at an age when most models have already retired, Saskia is just getting started. Saskia's show card...

Since her return to modeling, Saskia de Brauw has appeared in ads for Givenchy, Versace, MaxMara and Chanel, among others. Most notably, she was chosen to be on the cover for Carine Roitfeld's final Vogue Paris issue in March 2011. She has since been featured on covers for Numéro, Vogue Italia, Japanese Vogue, V, i-D, and Dazed & Confused Magazines. Saskia de Brauw is currently ranked No.11 out of the Top 50 Models of the world by Models.com.

Personal style pics... Saskia brings an individuality to her ensembles that I love, as if she dresses for no one but herself...

Fashion is supposed to be fun, and if we're going to take it seriously, either for its vices or its virtues, then we must be willing to acknowledge the variety of messages that it can send. If Saskia de Brauw, with her boyish haircut and androgynous features, can send any message with her looks, then it must be this: that in today's uncertain world, carrying yourself with an aura of strength may just be the most beautiful thing you can do.

P.S. Be sure to check out Saskia's blog!

What I like about her is that andorgynous look she has. Plus she's very chamaleonic and that's great in a model.

Stacey - I adore your blog! You're writing is as beautiful and inspiring as the models you feature. And it would be hard to find a more eye opening perspective into the fashion industry. Thank you for your sublime posts! I especially like this on Saskia - darkness and defiance loom over her pictures. She has a really unique look - great choice.
